this hour responding to the elizabeth warren/scot brown debate that happened in boston. that was a barn burner. but before that, i have to tell you we had a remarkable late in the game development in the presidential race today. it is october 1st. but what happened today is roughly the opposite of an october surprise, i guess? today the republican party announced that in five of the nine or so swing states in the presidential race this year, in the five states that you see marked with an x on this map, the republican party is stopping its voter registration efforts. the republican party has suddenly and totally as of october 1st given up on trying to register new voters in nevada, colorado, virginia, north carolina, and florida. each of those states is very much in play this year. and the republican party has announced that in these five key swing states, they are going to stop registering new voters. here are the voter registration deadlines for those states. typically what this would mean is between now and the last minute of the last hour on the last date that you see on the screen f

outside money has been dumped into the republican effort to defeat senator sherrod brown. it's unprecedented spending for ohio and unprecedented to have an incumbent outspent by this much money. but in ohio, the money does not seem to be working in that race. at least not the way it's supposed to. a new poll shows senator sherrod brown now leading his republican challenger by 7 points. despite being outspent hand over first. joining us is the senator from ohio sherrod brown. he's the lead sponsor of legislation addressing the china currency issue, a bill that, surprise, is currently stalled in congress. the romney campaign is hitting the reset button again. they are resetting by going to ohio and talking about china. why are they picking ohio? >> they are picking ohio because we lost between 2000 and 2010 the nation lost millions of manufacturing jobs. many were in ohio. what they are not talking about is how we have gained 500,000 manufacturing jobs back across the country. a number of them in ohio. it's about the automobile rescue. it's about reenforcing a steel mill. there a

night of five staffers for massachusetts republican senator scott brown, as well as other republican party operatives, chanting fake native american war whoops and doing tomahawk chops, to mock native americans. the abc affiliate in boston identified the scott brown staffers here as his deputy chief of staff, his constituent services council, his state director for massachusetts, and his special assistant. also, there is a massachusetts state republican party guy here, who works in conjunction with the brown campaign. scott brown came out shortly after he heard about this tape yesterday to say that he did not condone the behavior of his staffers here. but you know, this is not exactly an isolated incident. i mean, senator brown right now is basing his re-election campaign for the senate on the issue of elizabeth warren's ethnicity and what he thinks it really is. >> professor warren claimed that she was a native american, a person of color, and as you can see, she's not. that being said, she checked the box and she had an opportunity, actually, to make a decision throughout her caree

a still look for california. -- loomost of us still look to california. what governor brown said about the traditional politics is all about taking the thing in making it fresh. to a certain extent, i tried to be a writer in college. i failed miserably. a professor said everything has been set but not everything has been said superbly. even if it had, everything must be said freshly again and again. you have to see a fresh lead to a certain extent. the real issue with -- in terms of asking the president, what are the things that matter most, a bass part of those profits would be invested in california. colorado would have a significant -- pretty much every state in the country would benefit. you look at the companies based in silicon valley. they have offices, you want to expand your business, think about those young people in colorado. everything -- stated say the same thing. that money would get spent over the country very rapidly. >> thank you. governor brown. >> it is a good idea to bring back that $1 trillion sitting out there. how to do that, it remains to be seen. but then

with you. i'm terrell brown. this morning in afghanistan the taliban is claiming responsibility for a suicide attack that killed at least 14 people, including three nato service members. a suicide bomber riding a motorcycle rammed into a patrol. americans have a large presence there. nato is trying to sort out a weekend attack in afghanistan that left two americans dead. the casualties push the number of u.s. personnel killed in afghanistan to 2,000. the circumstances of saturday's violence remains unclear but a fire fight broke out at a checkpoint in eastern afghanistan. what nato hasn't determined so far was the gun battle a result of an insider attack or a deadly misunderstanding. drew levinson reports. >> reporter: this weekend marked the deadly milestone in afghanistan. 2,000 american soldiers killed since the war began nearly 11 years ago. it happened at a checkpoint in the eastern part of the country. one american soldier, an american contractor and three afghan soldiers were killed in a fire fight. >> the circumstances were somewhat confused but there was a report of insurge
